The Triple Threat Award
Every year the Flat Coated Retriever Society of America honors the characteristic versatility of our breed by recognizing the dogs that qualify in at least three different venues. The 2023 award to honor these dogs is the Triple Threat Award.
Definition and History
Merriam-Webster dictionary provides us with a nice definition of a triple threat. But the history behind the phrase is more interesting:
The phrase "Triple Threat" became popular in 1920 after Game 5 of the World Series. October 10, 1920 Cleveland Indians’ Bill Wambsganss becomes the only player in World Series history to complete an unassisted triple play when he makes a leaping catch, steps on second base, and then tags the runner arriving from first base halting a rally.
The phrase "Triple Threat" also is used in
Saint Louis University's Bradbury Robinson, who threw the first legal forward pass in football history in 1906, was undoubtedly the first "triple-threat man". He was the Blue and White's premier passer and sportswriters of the era reported that he "excelled" as a kicker and was an "electrifying" runner. |
